HealthCare Reform Update: Obama Adminsitration Delays Choice Option in SHOP Exchange

The New York Times reported on Monday, April 1st, that due to "operational challenges" the choice option will not be available in the federally run exchange program for small employers beginning in January 2014.  A key feature of the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP exchange), the choice option, will enable small group employers to offer their employees a choice of qualified health plans from several insurers, much as larger employers do.  In addition the exchange would "consolidate billing so employers can offer workers a choice without the hassle of contracting with multiple insurers."  This feature would allow an employer to pay a lump sum to the exchange which will then distribute the money to each insurance company covering its employees.

Administration officials said they will delay the choice option until 2015 in the 33 states where the federal government will be running the exchanges.  Ohio is one of the 33 states offering the federally run program.
